Friends,

After months of planning and construction, we formally unveiled the newly remodeled Little Rock Animal Village over the weekend. The Animal Village is now equipped with additional space and resources to support our four-legged friends needing permanent homes.

The Animal Village is the City's dog and cat shelter, where stray or unwanted animals are housed while they await adoption into new families. This most recent $1.3 million expansion will help our team at the Animal Village better serve our adoptable pets and the community.

The project included the addition of 1,633 square feet of space at the existing facility at 4500 Kramer St. We remodeled all 105 dog runs; renovated the food prep and bowl wash area; replaced laundry equipment and added a new laundry area; added a dog testing/photo room; remodeled and sound-proofed the cat holding area; added a dog intake area; and replaced flooring.

Our appreciation goes to Little Rock residents, private donors and Friends of the Animal Village. The nonprofit Friends of the Animal Village is an essential partner in helping us take care of animals and encourage their adoptions. That group helped lead the efforts to find foster families for many Animal Village animals during the remodeling process.

On Saturday, we hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the renovations, where we were joined by city officials, contractors Doyne Construction and WDD Architects and animal advocates. We are grateful for those who care for these animals. Animal Services Director Tracy Roark and his staff do work that often goes unnoticed and unheralded, but is an extremely important and necessary city service.

We appreciate the donors, Friends of the Animal Village and the Little Rock residents who made this much-needed renovation and expansion possible.

Trex Topping-Out

In yet another milestone for Little Rock's growth and our impactful economic development efforts, Trex Company held a topping-out ceremony to mark completion of the latest phase of its new building at the Port of Little Rock. Trex, the leading manufacturer of composite decking, is investing $400 million and is expected to add 500 new jobs to our economy.

The state-of-the-art production facility is situated on 300 acres at the Port, We are excited about the progress on the project from a company that focuses on sustainability and environmental stewardship. According to the company, the Little Rock plant will have buildings for decking and railing production, plastic film recycling and processing and reclaimed wood storage.

The Port is Little Rock's industrial park, and it is a centrally-located hub for business and industry with easy access to river, rail, road and runway. The Port is a key component in Little Rock's long-term strategy to attract new, high-paying jobs and promote growth.

As taxpayers, your investment in the Port has reaped outstanding dividends. Little Rock residents have invested $30 million for land acquisition and infrastructure since 2019. From that, we've seen a $831 million return in capital investments into our community.

On Nov. 5, voters will have an opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to bringing new jobs and sustaining our thriving economy. Our Results For the Rock sales tax proposal includes funding for additional land acquisition at the Port and for improvements to a game-changing industrial "super site" on Port land. With the additional investment, we will be able to attract new residents and grow our overall tax base, providing further support for the public safety initiatives and quality-of-life amenities that make Little Rock the best place to live, work, play and raise a family.

Upcoming Holiday

Next Monday, Sept. 2, is Labor Day. City offices will be closed Sept. 2 in observance of the holiday, and trash and recycling collection will be delayed by one day next week. Around holidays, we often get questions about trash and recycling schedules, so we thought this would be a good time for a reminder about those services.

Trash pick-up is provided weekly by the Little Rock Public Works Department, and our partners at WM (formerly known as Waste Management) collect recycling items curbside every two weeks. On weeks with holidays, service is delayed by one day. So if your trash and/or recycling is scheduled to be picked up on a Tuesday, for instance, then that collection will be pushed back to Wednesday.

The City of Little Rock's website has an easy-to-use map and calendar for residents. The calendar shows the specific dates of biweekly recycling collection. You can find the calendar below for your convenience.

If you need to report a missed trash or recycling pickup, please reach out to 311. You can download the 311 app in the App Store or Google Play if you don't already have them on your phones. You can also reach 311 by dialing 311 or visiting our website.

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday next week.
