Friends,
The past few days, we have welcomed thousands of guests to Little Rock for today's much-anticipated total solar eclipse. You are demonstrating why Little Rock is one of the best places to visit in America as we show our guests the very best in hospitality, dining and entertainment.
If you haven't already made plans to witness the total eclipse this afternoon, it is not too late to join us at a community center for a watch party! We will have refreshments, activities, music and more at Dunbar, Southwest, Stephens and West Central community centers. Our Parks and Recreation Department team will also host watch parties at Rebsamen Park Golf Course, First Tee, and on the lawn of MacArthur Park. Get all the details at LittleRock.gov/eclipse.
Whether you attend a City watch party, catch the concert at First Security Bank Amphitheater, take in the special events at the Zoo or participate in programming hosted by neighborhood associations or nonprofits, know that your City Hall team is hard at work to ensure our residents stay safe and have a great experience today.
For our team members, it's a day on, and not a day off. Police and emergency response have been working through the weekend to manage traffic, provide additional security at events, and make sure everything goes smoothly. Through the rest of today, the Little Rock Emergency Operations Center is open and prepared to handle any emergencies or public safety issues.
And don't worry, we are taking notes (or at least our younger employees are!) about how we can improve for the next total solar eclipse, a mere 21 years away!
Yes, this rare event happens again on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045 in our City. Most importantly, Little Rock is the only major city in the U.S. where you can watch today's eclipse and the one 21 years from now in the exact same spot!
We are marking that distinction with the creation of a video time capsule, and we are asking our residents to participate! Please take some time on Monday to record a short video telling us about you, where you live in the City and how you are observing today's eclipse. You can also share with us some of your expectations and predictions for the Little Rock of 2045.
We will compile the videos we receive into a time capsule to be released during the next eclipse in 21 years. Click here to upload your video submission!

We will start the day off at Union Park, located at the intersection of 38th and Walker streets. A free breakfast is available to all volunteers between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., before volunteers head to their service project sites in every Little Rock ward.

National Community Development Week
Last week, we observed National Community Development Week with recognition of the work our Department of Housing and Neighborhood Programs does to strengthen our neighborhoods and promote economic development.
We are focused on transforming our communities through targeted redevelopment and an intentional focus on affordable housing. Across the country, there is a shortage of affordable homes, even though we know that home ownership is a key factor in economic equity and in building generational wealth. That's why my administration has made a commitment to our residents to build 100 affordable houses across our City.
We marked National Community Development Week with a ribbon cutting to celebrate completion of one of those houses, located on Bowers Street in the John Barrow community. This house, built in partnership with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will soon be a home to Little Rock residents who can take the next step toward securing economic stability and mobility.
