Friends,

It's been almost eight months since the March 31 tornado, and the residents of our resilient city are rebuilding stronger and better. We are reaching significant milestones in our recovery nearly every day as homeowners and businesses repair and move forward.

One significant step in the recovery process took place earlier this month when the Kroger store in the Colony West Shopping Center re-opened its doors. I was fortunate to attend the Grand Re-Opening and reflect on the community's strength.

Together, we've come a long way since my first visit to the shopping center after the storm. I was there at daybreak on Saturday, April 1, to assess first-hand the damage to the businesses there. That day, we stepped over downed utility lines and debris while walking past overturned vehicles in the parking lot. Since then, so much hard work has gone into clean-up and rebuilding

At that point in the Spring, it was difficult to envision that the grocery store -- a community meeting place and important asset for the neighborhood -- would be re-opened by Fall. However, the same employees and leadership at the store who took cover themselves on the day of the tornado never stopped working to get the business back up and running.

I witness that same commitment and dedication in every neighborhood where the tornado hit. And though we have much more work to do, every day there's progress and promise in our most heavily-damaged neighborhoods.

The City of Little Rock shares in that commitment. Since March 31, we've waived $475,570 in permit fees to assist residents and help expedite the rebuilding process. And last week, our Planning Department sent letters to check in with property owners about the status of clean-up and ask about any obstacles they have encountered.

Through Little Rock Cares, we are distributing more than $600,000 in support to individuals impacted by the tornado and to the nonprofit groups that assisted in emergency response. We are grateful for the monetary donations from our friends and neighbors around the world.

The third-party administrator for grants to impacted individuals, Heart of Arkansas United Way, is expected to begin notifying recipients of award decisions by the end of this month. More than 70 volunteers from Little Rock signed up to serve on committees to review grant applications and determine funding amounts. We appreciate those volunteers, too, for their willingness to serve the community.

For all our efforts, we recognize that recovery is a lengthy process, and we have many more milestones ahead. We are working together in a spirit of strength, unity and resilience.

Workers last month completed demolition of FIre Station 9, which was severely damaged during the tornado.
GloWild!

An event that has become an annual holiday tradition for many families returns to the Little Rock Zoo starting this Thursday!

The GloWild 2023-2024 season begins Nov. 16 and goes through Jan. 7,  2024. This fascinating festival of lighted displays will be open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on select nights. It's one of the most popular events of the year for one of our region's most popular attractions, the Zoo. GloWild is a great way to support all the work the Zoo does for animal conservation.

This year, there are more than 40 lanterns displayed for what's called a "Once in a Light-Time Experience!" New lanterns for the 2023-2024 season include mythical creatures,  jungle animals and larger-than-life insects.

Special themed nights are Sensory Night on Thursday, Dec. 7. That's a night planned for a quieter, milder lantern display for those with sensory sensitivities. The New Year's Eve GloWild Party takes places on Sunday, Dec. 31, in Cafe Africa, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This family friendly party is included in regular admission.

Tickets for GloWild are $20 each. Family four-packs are a great value at $65. Kids under 3 are admitted free.

I appreciate the Arkansas Zoological Foundation in partnership with Tianyu Arts and Culture for making GloWild possible for another holiday season!
Little Rock Recycles Day

Little Rock Recycles Day returns on Saturday, Nov. 18. At this quarterly event, residents have an opportunity to safely dispose of recyclable material at one convenient drop-off point. Items may be dropped off from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Little Rock Zoo's East Parking Lot at the intersection of Zoo Drive and South Monroe Street.

Items that will be accepted for recycling include electronic waste, plastic bags, glass, documents for shredding, single-stream items (plastic bottles, jugs, cardboard, paper, aluminum and steel cans), household goods and textiles.

Little Rock Recycles Day is sponsored by the City of Little Rock Sustainability Office, the Little Rock Zoo and Keep Little Rock Beautiful.
"Anyone Can!" Food Drive

This time of year, with a spirit of generosity and hospitality, we focus on the needs of others as we approach the holiday season. To that end, the City of Little Rock's Department of Community Programs hosts an annual canned food drive, and we encourage the public to donate nonperishable food items for the cause.

This year, the food drive benefits Carter's Crew, a local nonprofit agency.

Please consider donating canned goods such as canned milk, fruit, beans or vegetables, fish or chicken, and pasta sauce. In addition, bags of rice, dry pasta, peanut butter, plastic bottles of jelly, boxed cereals and can openers are being accepted for the "Anyone Can!" drive.

A complete list of drop-off locations is below.
