Friends,

Today is 501 Day -- a day we acknowledge every year on May 1 (5/01) as we celebrate everything we love about life in the 501 area code. And, within the 501, there's no better place to live than Arkansas's capital city, Little Rock.

We marked the occasion this year with the launch of a brand-new initiative intended to attract even more of the best and brightest professionals to our City. The Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce has partnered with more than 30 area businesses, including the City of Little Rock, to offer new relocation incentives for future residents or former Arkansans looking to return to the 501.

Newcomers and former residents who relocate to Little Rock to take available positions in high-demand sectors would be eligible for a $10,000 relocation incentive. Local residents may also earn $501 by playing "matchmaker" and referring their out-of-state friends or family members. Full details on the program are available at MoveToLR.com.

Today, I joined Little Rock Chamber President Jay Chesshir, Chamber Board Chairman Rakesh Chokhani and Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield President Curtis Barnett to kick off the initiative. All four of us shared what we love about Little Rock, like its arts and cultural opportunities, restaurant options and amazing hospitality. As part of the campaign, potential new residents who go to MoveToLR.com  will hear from diverse voices about what makes our City an attractive place to live, work and play.

By offering incentives, we can strengthen our workforce, create more long-term growth and enhance the quality of life across the region and in Little Rock, the best City in the 501.

Sustain The Rock

Every year, we honor those whose contributions will create a more sustainable future by presenting the City of Little Rock's "Sustain The Rock" awards. This recognition program highlights individuals, businesses and organizations that make a positive impact on long-term sustainability through conservation efforts, renewable energy initiatives or community engagement.

The 2023 Sustain The Rock awards were presented in April during a recognition ceremony at the Little Rock Zoo's Cafe Africa. Winners were selected from nominations by the community. Nominees were required to live in the City of Little Rock or have their principal place of business located in the City,

The 2023 winners were:

Individual: Drs. Jessica R. Scott and Rene Shroat Lewis, faculty members at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock who have taught an honors course the past eight years focused on sustainability, climate change and carbon-footprint reduction.

City of Little Rock/Dunbar Garden: Chris Wyman, manager of the nonprofit Dunbar Garden, which offers a composting program, a community market and programming for neighborhood schools.

Educator: Chicot Elementary School, a community school that established Gordon Garden in 2021 and formed a Little Rock School District garden network to bring together schools and community partners who support food access and equity.

Student Organization: The Central High School Young Leftists, advocates for solar energy in LRSD.

Non-Profit Organization: Habitat for Humanity of Central Arkansas, which since its 1989 founding has worked to keep over 20 million pounds of reusable materials out of local landfills.

Volunteer Organization: Little Rock Garden Club, a century-old organization that has practiced conservation and promoted civic improvement with projects in various city green spaces.

Congratulations to all the award winners!
