Friends,

It was a busy summer for all of us: We marked the first-ever observance of Juneteenth as an official City of Little Rock holiday. We kept our promises by starting re-construction of the Kanis Park basketball courts and making major drainage improvements in the South End neighborhood. And Little Rock voters overwhelmingly approved extension of a millage to fund new street and drainage projects, parks and zoo improvements, fire equipment, a courts building and expansion of the Little Rock Port.

As we head into the fall, we’re excited to bring the community schools concept to two more Little Rock School District schools: Mabelvale Elementary and Mabelvale Middle. In partnership with the Little Rock School District, the City of Little Rock now supports six community schools. Our goal is to provide equity and educational excellence in community schools that serve as neighborhood hubs and provide access to resources addressing needs like health care and food insecurity. A community school coordinator and social worker are located at each school to match needs with services. Additionally, each school hosts regular community cafés for all families and residents.

I was glad for the opportunity to welcome Little Rock students back to the classroom recently, and I look forward to continuing to work with Superintendent Jermall Wright, the LRSD Board and the City Board to identify partnerships that will benefit students and their families.

UAMS Child Development Center groundbreaking

As we continue to emphasize targeted economic development, I was pleased to partner with UAMS to find a location for a new Child Development Center, which will serve 200 children from infancy to pre-K. The center will be located within the 12th Street corridor just south of Interstate 630. This exceptional and positive learning environment will benefit children in the heart of our city.

Countdown to Museum Opening

The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts is a beacon of light centered at MacArthur Park in downtown Little Rock, and after three years of renovations it will be shining even brighter when it reopens next April. I joined AMFA officials to announce the museum will reopen to the public on April 22, 2023. The City of Little Rock contributed more than $31 million to the renovation, which was made possible through a combination of public and private support. We should take pride in this institution that connects our entire community and attracts visitors from around the world.

LITFest plans announced

We’re just a few weeks away from the first-ever LITFest, a multi-day event highlighting the best of Little Rock! I’m so excited for the opportunity to show off our town during this unique festival that will feature art and music performances along with a business and technology summit. LITFest festivities include a River Market block party with local bands on Friday, Oct. 7, as well as an Equity in Economics Summit that same day. On Saturday, Oct. 8, we’ll have a TECH summit, food trucks, and performances along historic Ninth Street. There’s even more expected to be announced in the coming days. The week ahead:

This week, we will continue our ward-by-ward public meetings where we’re asking the people of Little Rock to tell us their priorities for the streets, drainage and parks projects funded through last month’s bond vote. Our “Continue the Progress” public meetings series will be at West Central Community Center, 4521 John Barrow Road, tonight; Kendall Nugent Conference Center, 900 W. Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive, on Wednesday; and Western Hills United Methodist Church, 4601 Western Hills Ave., on Thursday. All three meetings start at 6 p.m.

The Little Rock Board of Directors meets on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Meeting agendas can be viewed here each Monday. The City Board meets at the Centre at University Park, 6401 W. 12th St.

All week, city crews will be in the South End Neighborhood as part of our ongoing Project IMPACT community cleanup. We’ll be cleaning alleyways and lots across the neighborhood, and offering an opportunity for residents to place bulk items on the curb for pickup at no charge. Project IMPACT has visited 8 neighborhoods already this year and we’ll be headed to many more locations in coming weeks, making a positive IMPACT on our neighborhoods.
